49ers and QB competition

There is an old saying in the NFL that goes something like this, if you have 2 QB's, you have no QB's. Sounds about right in San Francisco. While everyone assumes that the teams offense will be much improved this year because of Mike Martz, early reports out of Niners camp are that neither Shaun Hill or Alex Smith have looked very impressive so far. Martz admits that he expected the first week or so of training camp to look like "organized chaos" while the team learned the offense but apparently things have looked downright ugly of late. Apparently, the Niners are even considering J.T. O'Sullivan in the mix to start. O'Sullivan spent last year in Detroit and knows the Martz offense.

Fantasy Impact: Maybe it's because I'm a Niners fan and I'm in denial, but expect Alex Smith to win this competition and have a decent season under Martz. But I'm loyal, not stupid. Don't draft Smith unless he performs well in the preseason. If he looks sharp in August, he might be worth a shot as your # 2 QB late in your draft. I think Hill and O'Sullivan will be after thoughts...but I've been wrong before.

Jackson, Grant still not in camp

Steven Jackson and Ryan Grant are still no where to be found in their respective training camps. The Packers have said that they are making progress with Grant but the Rams are having no such luck. The Rams are fining Jackson $15,000 a day and said they will not negotiate until he reports.

Fantasy Impact: We were a little "iffy" on Ryan Grant this year to begin with, but not being in training camp is making him look more and more like fantasy disappointment this season. As far as Jackson, we can't see the Rams being stupid enough not to get a deal done with their best player. Still, if Jackson arrives in camp late in the process it may take him a while to get going. He could start out the season slowly. You may want to consider Addai or Westbrook as your 3rd top rated back this year.

Favre signs reinstatement letter, does not report to camp

Brett Favre has signed a letter asking for reinstatement to the NFL, but apparently won't send it in until Monday or Tuesday. Favre did not report to Packers camp on Sunday because Packers GM Ted Thompson asked him to delay his arrival.

Personally, I'm hoping NFL commissioner Roger Goodell steps in and remedies this situation sooner rather than later. The whole situation, in my opinion, is a joke. Granted, I don't know the behind the scenes details but Brett Favre really looks like a selfish person to me right about now. It looks like the Packers want nothing to do with him and he will be traded. I'm betting on the Jets.

Fantasy Impact: This is why I don't like drafting until late August. See my post a few spots down for my thoughts on Favre as a fantasy QB in 2008. It looks like Aaron Rodgers will be the starter in Green Bay for sure. I think he can have huge upside this season but I wouldn't draft him as a # 1. Take him as your # 2 QB and he could end up starting for you down the line. In a QB friendly offense, he should throw 20 tds with ease.
